Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Bob the rock star - just silly

It certainly gives me a chuckle reading the various comments about Bob's short shorts!

I haven't seen any comments yet about Bob trying to be a rock star though.

Everyone is familiar with his HAAs and AHs etc. and perhaps his running back and forth at the end of Sugar Mag or trying to direct the crowd chants at the end of NFA - but does anyone recall various attempts of him climbing the left tower (scaffolding) with his guitar during some mid-80s shows? I think Ventura 85 was one attempt. It was so ridiculous and he was so awkward.

I guess the shorts made him this way but does anyone else remember some strange Bob incidents? Did his trying to be a rock star begin with him putting on the shorts or was he always like that?

By the way, when did he start wearing the short shorts ;-) ?

I saw him climb the tower at Kaiser in November of '85 but Phil came back in sooner than Bobby expected and he really had to scramble to get back to his lines.

One of the funniest things I saw was at a Bobby and the Midnights show where he was getting ready to come down hard on the guitar in some song so he ran across the tiny stage and jumped over a monitor to make the grand moment but instead tripped and landed on his butt. To his credit though he continued playing.

A little dime-store ( talk about a dated expression !) psychology . We all need to stoke our egos sometimes, more so if you are on stage . Jerry presence, and his solos were all he needed ! With Pig's departure, and eventually Jerry's retreat , Bob tried to fill the void . Since he didn't solo, in the conventional sort of way, he did it with his, frankly lame, attempts a rock & roll showmanship . Actually these attempts to "reach the crowd" we so lame that they were somewhat endearing, if not unintentionally funny . Sometimes he could be mindboggleing tasteless .
I recall seeing him do "Throwing Stones", in the part what he says "we are on our own", the light went on him and he strikes this corny Christlike, pose . Barf .

I personally disliked "Throwing Up" as we called it. The jam at the end could be pretty good but it was one of my least favourite Bob songs together with Hell in a Bucket and the worst of the worst was - Victim or the Crime. God aweful!

Hi Jess - Thanks for that post. I completely agree. Throwing Stones was, in most cases, a huge post-space letdown.

Yet thousands would sing, "ashes, ashes"....Then NFA(great, now I have to stand here and clap rhythmically until they decide to play another tune). So, the show was essentially over when the first notes of Throwin Stones was played. It then came down to the Encore and they were hit and miss during the Throwin Stones Era.

My favorite encore was Baby Blue. I liked the slower encores. The JBGs or US Blues never thrilled me as encores. I'd take a Black Muddy or Brokedown anyday.

Happy Holidays everybody!

I like Throwing Stones and Jerry's role in it, though the crowd's NFA ending got to be overplayed.

Still they were better than the other "Beautiful Bob" vehicle (once a used car dealer on Market St), Another Saturday Night.

Weren't those Bob video's revealing? I don't want to start another "Bob bashing" thread, but I think it safe to say that there was a "closet rock star" hiding in those short-shorts...nothing wrong with that, and it's only because we think of our boys as "counter culture" with a capital C that we find it so amusing when they reveal something altogether different about themselves...just like Bob being one of those to say "make money off the SBDs, don't give them away free!" it really isn't that odd or inappropriate EXCEPT in the context of what we understood them to be...and that's more on us than them since they clearly didn't (right? I dunno...?) try to "exploit" the laid back hippie sentiment or some such...we just assumed that's what they represented.

Have a great Christmas, Jess; I am so glad you've hung around here with all of us odd balls.

Thanks WT, a Merry Christmas to you too - and thanks for putting up with us newbies that also post some less music orientated silliness!

It's great to have you here and I much appreciate your input.

Ps. I just have to mention - back in the early days when you were actually seeing the Dead I did a skit at grade school (ca. 1973) with the William Tell Overture playing in the background. I was about 8 years old! Had a special interest in that title after I became a deadhead.

I think I was at that Kaiser show.

Bobby also liked to serenade on one knee, which only added to the silliness. Given the seriousness underneath Bucket and Victim -- what did that tiger represent? -- those antics and the Madonna t-shirt had to be a put-on.

Yeah, we called it that also . Now , didn't mind it at first... but it got old . Plus, it usually came after a Jerry Ballad ( usually an emotional l high point of a show ), and you know that not much was going to happen in the show after that song started . Also it was LONG , and the "jam" , more an instrumental part, that they did in it was mostly the same ( like those early versions were the jam is more open, spacey sounding ).
Hell, could be ok , but I actually like Victim, I know many don't . At least it has very little Bobby "rock star" antics in that one !

Weir explains his short shorts here.

.....but Bobby's silliest moment might just be the Best Music Video Ever!

I never saw that before - priceless!
I think I might be closer to understanding the lyrics now.

Those lyrics are awesome high rock'n'roll comedy! I always loved this song, though they did not always nail it live (imhoo!). Aside from Estimated Prophet, which is quite a bit more subtle, who knew that Barlow could be this hilarious?

Well I was drinkin' last night with a biker
And I showed him a picture of you
I said, "Pal get to know her, you'll like her"
Seemed like the least I could do.
Cause when he's chargin' his chopper
Up and down your carpeted halls
You will think me by contrast quite proper
Never mind how I stumble and fall.

You imagine me sipping champagne from your boot
For a taste of your elegant pride
I may be going to hell in a bucket, babe
But at least I'm enjoying the ride.

Cause you're a sweet little softcore pretender
Somehow, babe, it got as hot as it gets
With her black leather chromespark suspenders
And her chair and her whip and her pets.

Well I know you're the reincarnation
of the ravenous Catherine the Great,
and I know how you love your ovations,
and the z-rated scenes you create.

You imagine me sipping champagne from your boot
For a taste of your elegant pride
I may be going to hell in a bucket, babe
But at least I'm enjoying the ride.

You analyze me, tend to despise me
You laugh when I stumble and fall
There may come a say when I'll dance on your grave
If unable to dance I'll still crawl across it
Unable to dance I'll still crawl
Unable to dance I'll still crawl
Unable to dance I'll crawl.

You must really consider the circus
It just might be your kind of zoo
I can't think of a place that's more perfect
For a person as perfect as you.

And it's not like I'm leaving you lonely
Cause I wouldn't know where to begin
Well I know you wake up here only
When the snakes come marching in.

You imagine me sipping champagne from your boot
For taste of your elegant pride
I may be going to hell in a bucket, babe
But at least I'm enjoying the ride,
at least I'll enjoy the ride.
Ride, ride, ride
Ride, ride, ride
Ride, ride, ride
At least I'll enjoy the ride.
At least I'll enjoy the ride.

Not sure about the site I lifted these lyrics from. I made a couple of corrections that I was sure of, but I don't claim these are exactly correct ... close enough probably.
